I wouldn’t. That would be against EU regulation in so many level.

I was wondering about that too, despite the fact that it remains optional for users.

Optional yes, but before it can be offered it must be in privacy policy. And there we have another questionmark — where is the data stored and by who.

I enabled it, thought. Mainly because I’m not a company or a community as EU sees that, and then GDPR etc doesn’t apply directly. But even then saving data itself is regulated. If it is saved by one of those big ones, then there isn’t any bigger issue [1].

  1. hate to say this at loud, but potential issues by government of US are still there ↩︎

I don’t think we should enable this automatically on existing sites, no. It would be an unwelcome and intrusive change for almost all Discourse communities out there (both private and public, but especially private).

Yeah that makes sense. I guess my suggestion mostly reflects how excited I am by this feature  :meow_heart:

I got a banner saying I was logging in with Twitter and that option is going away. That’s news to me as I usually chose Google to login.

Regardless, there was a link to “link my account…” but tapping it took me to a section of my profile preferences that had no such option. There was nothing for me to do. I’m confused.

I logged out, created a Discourse ID, then logged back in using it and doing the normal password and 2fa dance. I think that has linked my account to my new Discourse ID but I’m not sure because I can’t see anywhere in my profile what method my account is using. (Edit: I see the linked account at https://id.discourse.com)

So, all is not clear to me.

Settings > profile and you don’t see something like this?

I don’t think he is able to see that. He said he uses 2fa

Nothing remotely like that.

Ah, in that case the notification banner is misleading. It should be able to detect the account is using 2fa and give the user correct specific instructions. Don’t show me links that don’t apply to me.

Even changing the notification banner text to include a link to Discourse ID 2fa process would be enough.

Cheers!

That’s true. I missed that part.

Thank you for the feedback :memo:

We’ve just made an update to the banner to behave this way and we’ll update the text accordingly.

I hope this leads to having all the different communities to adopt a consistent look and feel.
