The user Mathijs_V reported an issue where email notifications for assigned topics do not have the option to reply by email, despite having reply by email enabled in their Discourse setup. pfaffman suggested checking the settings, which Mathijs_V provided, showing that manual polling is not enabled but POP3 polling happens every minute. Mathijs_V also confirmed that replying to private messages or topics by email works, but not for assigned topics.
pfaffman was confused about the issue, but it seems that reply by email is working for other types of emails. Mathijs_V disabled and re-enabled the assign mailer enabled option, but the issue persists. To further troubleshoot, Mathijs_V requested that sam assign the topic to them to see what kind of email notification they receive.
Our discourse setup has working reply by email. It seems the mails generated by the assign plugin don’t have the option to reply to the topic by email.
In the plugin options there is a setting called assign mailer enabled → When enabled, the assigned user will receive a notification email on each assignment only.
The screenshot below shows an example of the mail I receive when someone sends a private message. It says at the bottom of the page that I can reply to this email to respond. I get the same results when I get a mail about a topic.
I was confused. It seems that Troy by mail is working. Did you turn on assign mailer enabled? And still the assign messages do not have the option to reply?
