Feedback op de componist bij het vertalen van een bericht naar het Duits

I’m writing this as an experience report for now:

I have just edited the translation of this post: Introducing our new composer, making writing on Discourse easier than ever. (Somehow some parts were missing in the German version :woman_shrugging:).

First, the border box that moves with the scrolling was a bit irritating. I would have expected to scroll within it.

Second, I would have liked to check the preview of my translation several times in between. Especially with the quotations, but also to integrate the images correctly into the list. In the end, I simply copied everything and looked at it in a normal composer and then pasted it back into the translation.

While we’re on the subject of using the composer. In between, I wanted to make notes for this post. It was a bad idea. I made the mistake of minimizing the composer in which I was editing the translation and then I clicked on ‘new topic’. If the composer is not minimized, the typical question appears whether you want to discard or continue. When the composer is minimized, this does not appear. Everything I had already done was gone :scream:

So I went back to inserting all the missing images by quoting and removing the quote formatting and adding the block quotes. Adding the images would have been easier if I could also look at the raw version of the original post. Then I could have copied them from there. Also finding the correct emoji would have been easier then.

So I guess I would like an original post/preview toggle and a button to view the raw of the OP, maybe similar to the one in the edit history. And I would like to get a warning when I minimize the composer and clicking new topic discards my work.

Thanks @Moin ! We’ve updated the translation editor to improve a few things based on your feedback.

These changes should be live now!

Is there a reason why the GIF in the post is not resized to prevent side-scroll in the preview?

And I can now see the preview of my translation, but I couldn’t find the raw version of the original to easily copy the images and check which emoji was used.

I also didn’t notice a warning when I clicked “new topic” while I had unsaved changes in the translation composer.

But I notice the timer for closing has been removed, so I guess not everything should be covered by your commit.

Interesting, I am not encountering that issue on my end. Can you refresh and try again and see if it’s still present?

If so, please if you don’t mind sharing:

  • Your OS
  • Browser and version
  • Theme you’re using on Meta
  • If it’s happening at certain browser widths

This will help me debug the issue.

Ah my bad, sorry that’s an oversight on my part, I forgot to add the button to view the raw of the OP. Will work on that :+1:

So far, I have only tried on my Android tablet (Tab S9 FE). I tried in Firefox and Chrome. Both are on the latest available version, and I did refresh. Usually, I use Foundation full width, but it’s the same in safe mode, so I don’t think that matters. It happens in landscape mode as shown above. Portrait mode or two windows side by side in landscape mode did not resolve the issue – I did not expect it to, given that the window is even narrower. However, it is not possible to make it any wider :woman_shrugging:

Ah it might be a tablet issue, I will test on one later and try and see if I can resolve it. This is helpful thanks!

I can also repro on my laptop (Win 11, Edge) as soon as the width is 1461px or less

These two issues should now be resolved and live:

Please let me know if you encounter any issues!

The Raw view and the images now work perfectly.

Sorry, it’s probably just me, but I still can’t find the warning that creating a new topic will cause the changes to the translation to be discarded.

Thanks @Moin your video helped!

It looks like this was a bug isolated to clicking create a new topic/reply on unsaved translation changes after minimizing the composer. The dialog warning was showing if you clicked while the composer was still open.

I’ve pushed a fix and it should be deployed here on Meta. I gave it a quick test and it’s working for me, but please do let me know if you encounter any issues!
