How to make a category read-only for users on the free plan?

Hellow,

I’m building a community forum using Discourse’s free hosted plan at muvix-vq.discourse.group.

I created a category called “Announcements” that I want to be read‑only for regular users — meaning only staff (admins/moderators) can create new topics, but all users can view and reply to existing topics.

I understand that full category permission controls may not be available on the free plan. Is there any alternative way to achieve this?

What I’ve tried:

  • I looked in Admin → Categories → Announcements → Security, but I only see basic options.
  • I also checked if I could use tags or topic statuses to restrict who can post.

What I’m looking for:

  • A way to prevent regular users from creating new topics in that specific category, while still allowing them to reply.
  • Any workaround using Discourse’s trust levels, group settings, or a different category setup that works within the free plan limitations.

I’m still learning the platform — any guidance would be really appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Maybe requiring approval for new topics in that category helps. Then you could decide not to approve them. I think that option is available on the free plan, but I haven’t checked.
