How do I render a Word document (.doc, .docx) in the browser using JavaScript? - Stack Overflow discusses a few ways this might be possible. It should be possible to create a theme component that could do previews.

Not directly word documents. But the 2nd part “as pdf”. There is a theme-component or plugin for inline pdf viewing.
