I want to create a new category for small updates, but don’t want these topics indexed by search engines. Is it possible to do this via some setting? Or any plugins for this?
By search engines, di you mean things like Google?
If so a simple solution as these small updates I suspect are just related to your community
Create new category
- Category Security.
- Delete Everyone See/Create/Reply
- Add Trust_level_0 See
Add your staff/mid or group that is allowed to create and reply to topics. With the Tl0 you can of course add other permissions needed ie reply.
This will make topics in this category only viewable by logged in users Vs Everyone that allows non logged in users to view topics and this allowed crawlers to index public viewable content
Thanks Dan but this is not what I’m after - the topics should still be visible to everyone, we just want to let search engines know they need not be indexed…
Can the be available to everyone who’s logged in and not everyone? If so, make the category available to tl0.
If not, maybe you can use the setting that changes your robots.txt to exclude the category. Search settings for robots and there’s a link you can click that goes to /admin/customize/robots
.
Won’t that just noindex the category page tho?
You’re right. You can’t do it with the robots.txt. You’d need a plugin.
Is that worth of all the job? I mean is it really an issue? There is really big chance that any of search machines would ever show those hits. There isn’t just enough content. And who would ever even search such info-level things?
That is basically quite simple thing:
- it public visibile isn’t an option, then visitors shouldn’t see that content either, and visibility should be TL0
- if that content isn’t secret in any means, then you should not care about visits of bots
