In general the key metrics you use should flow from your community strategy 
What are you trying to achieve with your community?
These communities will have completely different KPIs and growth strategies:
- A non-profit forum for Gardening Enthousiasts
- A community run by Monster.com for Neurosurgeons looking for work
- A support forum for Samsung printers
