Silenciar categorias para um usuário através da API?

I run a language-learning website with language specific top level categories (Japanese, Korean…). It’d be great if I could automatically have the user subscribed to the language categories they’re interested in and auto mute all the other ones.

Is this possible? Could it perhaps be achieved by user groups? I ask the latter because I use sso and could specify group membership through that.
