Não consigo entender bem. Minha melhor suposição é que você copiou algum caractere invisível entre os dois pontos e o //.
Talvez tente digitar o comando. Ou, se você o digitou, tente copiar e colar.

Sim, obrigado @pfaffman e @Moin , vocês dois estavam corretos… Eu tinha copiado/colado o comando
https://github.com/discourse/discourse.git /var/discourse no console baseado na web no Hetzner
Eu tentei digitá-lo no console em vez disso, e de fato funcionou!

Isso é uma armadilha. O console web da Hetzner usa layout de teclado alemão
