joffreyjaffeux has acknowledged the issues and plans to update the guide in the future. Meanwhile, sam has removed the quick setup, suggesting that users can opt for a “long setup” due to the varying personal preferences on OSX. An alternative ultra-quick setup using Docker is available: https://meta.discourse.org/t/beginners-guide-to-install-discourse-for-development-using-docker/102009.

Problems I’ve run into so far:

  • Brewfile is broken (Brewfile is out-of-date?)
  • apple-gcc42 doesn’t work past Mavericks
  • It forces an installation and use of ruby 2.0.0, but rails requires version >= 2.2.2 (this is in the output: ERROR: Error installing rails: activesupport requires Ruby version >= 2.2.2.)
  • It requires bundle to be installed but doesn’t install it (or mention it in the documentation)

I was following instructions here: https://github.com/discourse/discourse/blob/master/docs/DEVELOPMENT-OSX-NATIVE.md

And as a side note, I still haven’t managed to install discourse.

For ultra quick setups we have:
