The discussion revolves around setting the subcategory view as the default on a Discourse forum’s category page. CommunityJ wants to replicate the subcategory view, which displays the subcategory name on the left and the latest posts on the right, on the category page itself. sam suggests using the site setting “desktop category page style” to control the look and feel of the page.
However, Ryan_Driver and others have difficulty finding this setting. Jonathan5 provides instructions on how to access the setting, while rishabh suggests running the setup wizard again to change the layout.
huynhthai824 clarifies that the goal is to set subcategories as category boxes on the homepage. downey mentions that there is no built-in way to achieve this but provides a link to a related discussion on Meta Discourse.
pfaffman mentions a theme component that can potentially solve the issue but notes that it needs improvement. huynhthai824 offers to donate to have the component completed.
I am an employee at Jupiter.community (Categories - Jupiter Community). I was wondering if there was a way to make the default category page look like the subcategory page. For example - the category page has a section called ‘latest’ with individual topics.
The subcategory page looks a lot neater, as it has the name of the subcategory on the left, and then the latest post within that subcategory on the right.
I literally just had this same question asked to me in a meeting the last hour. Basically have a specific “landing category” for members of a particular group (in the example I was asked about, at least).
I am not aware of any way to do this just yet but will keep looking.
When I get some time, or someone asks nicely, submits a PR, or pays me money, I’ll improve that theme component. I think it works, though it’s not clear how to use it… Hmm. I’m not sure that it actually works, but it’s pretty close.
