We use several automated messages when a user joins:
- 15 minutes after joining: a welcome from me that points to some helpful areas in the community. Our product updates are sent through the community, so I built a tool that helps them change notification levels for categories from a list in the DM.
- 24 hours later: a quick “if you haven’t yet, be sure to customize your profile & preferences”
- 1 week later: a probe to see what they think of the community so far.
