A feature request was made to split the settings for “Who can message and @mention this group?” into two separate settings. tobiaseigen and mcwumbly expressed the need for this feature, as they want to allow mentioning but not messaging for certain groups. nbianca implemented the feature through a pull request and received positive feedback from the community. The feature has now been merged, allowing for two separate settings: “Who can message this group?” and “Who can @mention this group?” This change is seen as a welcome improvement, especially since group messaging is still not fully developed.
We use groups actively in our community but are only gradually rolling out group messages, especially while some key messaging features are not yet in place. We also don’t intend to use all of them for messaging anyway, but rather use them for permissioning and mentioning in discussion topics.
So it would be a big help to be able to have separate settings for mentioning and messaging so they can be different.
I would like to make groups mentionable, but not message-able as we’d like to really encourage all activity on Discourse to take place in topics.
I’m a little weary of just trying things out as currently implemented because it may be harder to “take away” the feature from groups later if we open it up, because… loss aversion and what not.
@tobiaseigen what are your thoughts about this feature ~ 1year later?
