Tagging a topic from email in

The discussion revolves around tagging topics created through email-in. sizeof created a topic with tags through the web interface, but when they tried to tag a topic through email-in using the #toyota::tag format, it didn’t work. sam expressed concerns that building a feature for tagging through email-in would be complex and difficult for users to understand, given the various possible syntax formats.

erlend_sh explained that the # sign is only used for autocomplete and not for adding tags, which can be confusing for users familiar with Twitter or Instagram conventions. He suggested that the community stick to GitHub’s take on hashtags and instead focus on educating users about the correct usage.

The conversation also highlighted a previous discussion about hashtagging, and sam noted that this issue is a duplicate of a previous topic.

Hello again,

Apologies for posting again I didn’t provide enough information and I wasn’t clear enough in the previous topic.
I followed this tutorial here Set up structured tagging with tag groups and category tag restrictions to create several tags to be used for classifying and searching for topics later.
The issue is that I’m not able to find the topic using the tag I wrote in the text.

First, I created a new topic through the web interface like this:

And it when done, it looks like this:

Notice that it’s tagged appropriately.

Then, I sent the following text through e-mail:

Trying to tag this topic to the #toyota::tag tag using email-in.

The created topic looks like this:

And the last two topic created look like this:

As you can see, the topic created through email-in is not tagged. And when I click on the tag only the topic that I created through web is shown.

Regards,
sizeof

The reason we are so uneasy about this is cause it would be building a feature for 1 person.

How would anyone know to add the magic syntax?

subject: I can haz tags
body:
This is a topic I am making with

tags: bob

vs

With there be a reason not to accept all three of those formats?

You can’t tag topics this way. Not by ordinary posting, nor by email. We only use the # sign to autocomplete tags, not to add them.

This is understandably confusing to people used to the conventions of mediums like Twitter or Instagram, but makes sense to those more used to GitHub for example. Here’s one previous discussion about this.

We’re not going to change this convention (i.e. we’re sticking with GitHub’s take on hashtags), but I’d welcome ideas on how to better educate users about it.
