Yes, Discourse does via the Summarize button.
I was just hoping to have a more manual system that hints to the summarizer to do the right thing.
The goal here is the same as the summarize button. If you come to a long topic for the first time, and just want a quick glance, the important posts are there and easy to see. If you want to get involved, expand and read all.
The closest thing we have is giving lots more weight to staff likes when it comes to summarise. I guess we could have a mode where a staff like is infinite weight

This topic is huge, friendly, full of advice and information, all centered around photos of people’s audio setups:
It’d be nice if the “advice” and discussion around each could be deprioritized and only the “show off your setup” posts be in the summary for new users. Deleting is a bad idea, and splitting off the discussion for ‘what’s that thing?’ ‘oh thats a X’ is silly unless you also split off the photo, which is not ideal.
Here’s a topic where we solicited ideas. Ideally, in this topic, the summary would include only ideas and not the discussion around the ideas. Duplicate ideas are posted on this topic because it is impossible to filter the ideas from the discussion. We have manually processed this topic many times to gather feedback, it’s unfortunate that our users can not also benefit from that work.
I guess we disagree; splitting is really the way to go, particularly if useful info is buried in a topic.

Nothing there deserves to be deleted, and splitting the topic doesnt help. Summarize helps filter out the +1’s, but doesn’t do enough.
This topic is super hot right now for us. Our moderators would manually prune this daily with the current “hot” points until the topic dies down.
it almost works, but not quite… i’d want the current post to be auto-summarized for new viewers.
help me understand… why would I want historical context to disappear? we tend to only delete when the posts are bad, not when they are just noisey.
So then do the pruning after that burst of activity is completed. If you have an attitude that “every post is sacred and cannot be touched” then there’s really nowhere to go here. You have to take the attitude that preserving the expressed intent is what matters, which can be resolved by combining the same feedback into one post (rather than 10+) to reduce needless repetition, editing the first post to include the information, and so on.
Instead, add moderator notice, please like the OP if you would like the feature, further +1s will be deleted
@dannydulai I’m a little lost here, following this conversation. You first talked of something “manual”. Sam’s proposition would IMO perfectly respond to that request by summarizing according to moderator’s likes. Then you’re talking of something automatic ? Which one is it that you want ? Or what I am missing here ?
I made an English error by using the word summarize to mean 2 different things.
I want manual “hiding” as I originally stated. Sam’s proposal was to give me a manual way to add “infinite weight” to the auto-summarize algorithm. That doesn’t give me hiding. It gives me “a strong hint to the auto-summarize algorithm to hide the post when you click [Summarize Topic]”. The topic still needs to be manually “summarized” by new users clicking [Summarize Topic]. Try it – if you click [Summarize Topic] and revisit, the topic will be “unsummarized”. So if the “manual infinite weight method” is added to Discourse, I’d need a way to mark the topic to automatically show up as “summarized” to meet my needs.
I hope that answers what I failed to convey, and that you missed that [Summarize Topic] is not automatically turned on for new visits.
Understood. You want “hidden” by default with the option to expand. Not the opposite. So Sam’s proposition would need to come along with a way for staff to select topics or tags to be summarized by default.

“حذف” المشاركات لا غنى عنه لأسباب قانونية. نحن نستخدم حاليًا وضع الإخفاء لهذا الغرض، حيث يُسمح فقط للمستخدمين ذوي مستوى الثقة العالي جدًا برؤيتها.
ستكون الإمكانية الإضافية لـ “الإخفاء الناعم” للمشاركات مفيدة جدًا للحفاظ على سلاسة قراءة المواضيع، وإبقائها قريبة من الموضوع دون جعل المشاركات غير مرئية للمستخدمين.
أعتقد أن هذا المزيج سيكون مفيدًا جدًا لجعل المنتديات أكثر فائدة للمستخدمين، حيث يتجنب أن يمتنع القراء عن قراءة موضوع ببساطة بسبب طوله المفرط، الناتج عن مشاركات خارج الموضوع.

في منتديات مثل منتدياتنا، حيث يمكن أن تحتوي المواضيع بسهولة على أكثر من مائة مشاركة ويمكن أن تكون المناقشات موجهة نحو الحقائق وأحيانًا شخصية، سيكون شيء من هذا القبيل نعمة للحفاظ على قابلية قراءة المواضيع دون حذف المشاركات غير المتعلقة بالموضوع قليلاً.
