Topic title translation issues

In addition to the two topic title content localization bugs I reported here, I just encountered another one.

This topic had a Chinese title. In English it was translated to “They all exploded when I woke up”.

I decided to edit the title to something more meaningful.

When I clicked the pencil the title changed from English to Chinese. Understandable so far.
I changed it to “Global Cloudflare Outage”.

However, after saving, the title stays “They all exploded when I woke up”

That is because you changed the original chinese title into “Global Cloudflare Outage”, not the english translation of it. Using the pencil in the post menu makes it easier to see the distinction.

You also completely the title language, which would need to reset the whole language detection into translation flow over again.

I guess the bug here is that the quick edit for title / category / tags doesn’t support the popup for picking which locale needs to be translated. As this can get quite tricky, I propose that we disable the whole quick edit when viewing localized topics. When clicking on the pencil for quick edit, it should popup the locale picker modal and open the composer for the OP.

Ok, so now I used Google translate to translate “Global Cloudflare Outage” back into Chinese.
Then I used the post-pencil and edited the Chinese topic title.

Then I had to use the post-pencil and edit the English topic title, which got me where I wanted to be.

However, when I switch to German, it still says “Als ich aufwachte, explodierten sie alle”. And I assume that goes for every other language as well.

So I guess that in addition to your proposed workaround, an edit of the original title should also trigger a re-translation of the title into the other languages.

We have a limit of 2 translations per day for posts, looks like problem post had 7 in the last 3h, so they are not automatically translated anymore.

I think that may be the main cause of that behavior.

Aaaaaaaaaaaah that explains.
Yes, the history showed that I was not the only one who attempted this

Good that Richard’s issue was solved! Hopefully you don’t mind if I continue the discussion a bit

So is this possible currently or a bug? I couldn’t find any easy way to change the translation of titles. We’d like to manually translate a few titles, as currently some company names like Red violet are also translated

We’re issuing a fix very soon.

If you want to update titles, whether it is the original or the translated, the best way is to go to the first post, and click on the edit button where you’ll be prompted if you want to edit the original or the translated. The title also shows up in the composer.

You can view this video for an idea of what I mean:

You can edit them like you can edit the translated post

But you cannot edit them separately as it’s possible to edit the original title.
