Over at What happens when a topic has over 1000 replies? - Demo if you click on the avatar of the first post or Sam’s 3rd post, the user card either doesn’t come up or immediately disappears. Also this post.
I think it has to do with there being a one-box there, though the onebox explanation doesn’t cover the first-post case.

Very big edge case … I guess if we get a 404 or something when asking for extra data we should say “account not active” or something like that.
