What's this read indicator in PMs?

I’ve only ever seen this on a few seemingly random PMs, what is this? As far as I can tell, it seems to be part of Discourse core.

I’ve only ever seen this on a few seemingly random PMs,

The read indicator is only shown on a group’s PMs. It will be displayed to group members if the group’s “On group messages publish group read state” setting is enabled:

I’ve been stumped looking for this setting a few times. I always expect it to show up as a site setting, not as a group setting. Configuring it on the group level makes sense though.

Thank you! That makes sense, I wish there was something (e.g. a tooltip) that explained it where a user would see it.
