Who would prefer a standard wysiwyg to markdown?

OK, that makes me feel a lot better. So if I am understanding correctly now, you essentially want to be able to type into what is currently the preview pane, and have it look exactly as it will when posted. You want Discourse to handle all the markdown in the background, without displaying it to the user?

Correct.

Now I will admit this is not a trivial task, and I’m not expecting it to happen tomorrow. I just want to know if it’s a goal at all.
