Latest avatar size doesn't change the size

I have the impression the Latest avatar size setting no longer works. I tried different sizes, and the only difference I noticed was that the avatars of other frequent posters disappeared.

I think the options selected for these screenshots are tiny, small, and extra_large. The only change I notice is the width, but the avatar sizes still look the same to me.
