Not sure if that’s the answer you want, as I don’t have an iPhone, so I can only share my general workaround. I usually click the and use the ‘preformatted text’ button in there. If you typed something before you use it, it adds inline code; if you use it on a new line, it adds a block. You can also type first, select the text, and use the button.
