Usability and UX support for a non-profit, Discourse-based digital self-help platform

Hello everyone,

We operate a complex digital platform based on Discourse as a non-profit, health-related self-help organization.

Our goal is to implement self-help for neurodivergent people in this form for the first time in a structured, scalable, and digital manner.

To achieve this, we are looking for experienced Discourse specialists to help us further improve the usability, structure, and user guidance of our platform.

About Our Platform

Our Discourse instance is the central working and meeting system of our self-help organization. It includes, among other things:

  • several self-help groups with their own protected areas
  • organization and onboarding of group members directly via Discourse
  • Peer counseling with structured areas for exchange, support, and documentation
  • areas for the qualification of active members, e.g., further training, workshops, and materials
  • Supervision and professional exchange for group leaders and peer counselors
  • Event management (regular appointments, individual events, registrations, reminders)
  • coordinated co-working and body doubling offers
  • structured chats and topic workflows
  • permanent access to a video conferencing system for groups, supervision, and meetings
  • connection to a WordPress website for public information

The platform is used daily by people with ADHD, autism, and other neurodivergent profiles.

Therefore, clarity, low cognitive load, clear orientation, and accessibility are particularly important.

What We Are Looking For

We need support with:

  • analyzing and improving our category, role, and navigation structures
  • optimizing user journeys for different target groups (new users, group members, active members, peer counselors, moderators)
  • reducing complexity without losing the professional and organizational functions of self-help
  • recommendations for suitable Discourse-native solutions (themes, components, plugins)
  • if necessary, also with the concrete implementation

Important

This is not a simple forum installation, but a digital infrastructure for health-supported self-help.

Experience with Discourse in complex community, organizational, or educational structures is therefore required.

German language skills are ideal; English may be possible.

I’m interested in this project. I am a neurodivergent Discourse admin and developer and ex-staff. I am confident I can help you and make it reasonable as well. German language translation is not a problem. Please message me if you are interested.
