There is Making custom CSS changes on your site for general information on how to do this

You can use the brand header component to make the header you’re describing and it should be some easy CSS to add a background. There is no native way to my knowledge to move the site banner up there. TY. Making a banner is easy. Having it as a background seems to be the tricky part. I had it with my previous theme, but it was so long ago, I can’t remember what css I had to change to do it. AFAIK, anything is possible with custom CSS, right?

Yes, it’s as easy as a simple component. I’m not around my computer at the moment so I can’t grab the class for you but if you go to DevTools you can get the class and just make a new component: .banner_background { // put the real class here background: url("https://example.com/example.png") cover no-repeat; }

That is the default header. If you’re looking to apply the background to the header then yes, but if you want it to be separate that is not it. If you do want to apply the background to the site header then use .d-header .wrap

TY. Any chance you could point me to where I can find instructions on how to make that change? I know very little about css and even less about customizing discourse!

Can you let me know what “change” you mean?

How I change the background of the top of the page to the image that’s behind the welcome message.

If you are looking to replace the background of the site header then this is what you want .d-header .wrap { background: url("https://example.com/example.png") cover no-repeat; }

Sorry, I wasn’t being clear. There’s probably a “step by step” on how to add custom css to the site. That’s what I’m looking for.
