Reddit is pushing mobile users out of the browser and into its app because apps give platforms more control, more data, and more ways to monetise attention. Discourse takes the opposite position.
That’s exactly my situation. Currently, I access Reddit exclusively via my mobile browser to follow r/brasil and a few niche subreddits. As soon as the gates close, I’ll stop using it altogether.
I’ve been trying to activate a PWA app on Google Play again, but due to current installation policies—Google is now requiring developers to verify digital fingerprints even for TWAs. I’ve noticed it somehow manages to track my average web app installations. Absolutely absurd!
Anyway, the Reddit dumbing-down driven by shareholder pressure was to be expected ever since that API farce, which I used quite a bit. It hasn’t been the front page of the internet for a long time now. Long live Discourse!
