After updating from 1.4.0.beta9 to 1.5.0.beta1, top menu filters no longer work. I’ve been using the syntax latest,-questions to exclude the questions category from forum homepage but now it stops working.

No – this moved to the category edit dialog. Look for it there.
No more weird custom syntax, tick the tickbox on the category edit dialog.
