Do you know if this is still an issue?
I think what should happen now is that the messages should show up as deleted, with the ability to reveal them, per this other fix made here: Chat channels broke after user deleted - #6 by mcwumbly

¯\_(ツ)_/¯ sorry, it’s rare I get a user who gets themselves auto-flagged, who I then delete… so not sure what the behavior is currently.
