Any technical or philosophical reason no emoji in titles ❓

AI 生成的摘要

The discussion revolves around the possibility of allowing emojis in Discourse topic titles. jesselperry initiates the conversation, suggesting that emojis could be used to designate topic features, and proposes that the feature be limited by trust level. riking mentions that there’s no technical reason why emojis aren’t allowed in titles and that Unicode versions can still be used.

jesselperry officially requests the feature, while others, including elberet and Mittineague, express concerns about potential abuse and suggest that the feature should be disableable or restricted to staff and/or minimum trust levels. zogstrip announces that the feature has been added, but it’s not restricted yet, and will be monitored for abuse before adding more code.

The discussion also touches on the implementation details, with cpradio seeking clarification on whether the feature is permitted based on the existing emoji setting, and zogstrip confirming that it is. codinghorror suggests a tweak to convert titles into Unicode emojis in the browser.

Curious if there was any reasoning why emoji can’t be inserted into topic titles. I’m sure it could be abused - but so could emoji use in general :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:  :scream:

Additionally could use it to designate topic features:

Possibly a feature limited by trust level.

I think it’s more of a “late to the party” situation. No real reason why they aren’t allowed there, and you can still use the Unicode versions (they’ll only show up in color on mobile + Mac, though).

Well in that case, I’m officially requesting the feature :sparkles:

Think it will add some style :tophat: and functionality :white_check_mark: to topics :speech_balloon:

Your :tophat: and :white_check_mark: are another man’s :alarm_clock: :loud_sound: …

This should definitely be disableable or restrictable to staff and/or minimum TL.

Unbridled use is likely to pollute the list pages with “look at ME” use that has nothing to do with the topic.

Exactly, but it might be a useful feature for community managers to direct attention to interesting topics that scales differently than pinning.

Yeah I think it’s worth considering, but only for certain trust levels. Probably TL2 and higher.

or, as admin, I just go remove them and let the OP know why…

Just added this feature. It’s not restricted yet. Let’s see if users indeed abuse it before adding more code

:tada: :confetti_ball: :tada: :confetti_ball:

I think this depends on when the new code shows up vs the next beta getting cut.

Just so I don’t pass along incorrect information to SP, this is permitted now based on whether emojis are enabled or not correct?

It isn’t a separate site setting to permit them in Topic Titles (which is fine, just making sure I understand the git commit changes).

That’s correct :+1:. It’s currently using the same setting.

One tweak we should maybe make @zogstrip:

Titles could be converted into unicode emoji, at least for the browser. Low pri of course..
