Não é possível salvar as configurações de segurança de categoria ao adicionar um grupo personalizado

I encountered a problem with category security settings.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Create a custom group and add members to it.
  2. Go to Admin → Categories → [Category name] → Security.
  3. Try to add the custom group to the security list (with See/Reply/Create permissions).
  4. Click “Save Category.”

Expected result:

  • The custom group should be added and saved as a permission for the category.

Actual result:

  • After saving, the group is not saved and disappears when I go back to the category settings.
  • This happens both in Japanese UI and English UI.
  • Tested on Discourse (self-hosted).

Additional info:

  • The group itself exists and members are correctly assigned.
  • Only “everyone” is saved, but any custom group cannot be stored.
  • No error message is shown.

Is this a known bug or am I missing some setting?

Environment:self-hosted on ConoHa VPS, Mailgun EU region

I can reproduce. I think it’s by design, but I agree that it’s confusing. And there should be an explanation.

If everyone is allowed to read, post, and create topics, then adding another group doesn’t change permissions.

What do you want to achieve with the group you add?

Maybe the text would already help. But as I reported before, it is only shown when the default locale is English, so “everyone” is in English

What I actually want to achieve is not restricting permissions, but distinguishing a group of “category-specific managers” from normal users.
Both normal users (everyone) and these managers should be able to see/reply/create topics. But when the managers reply, I’d like it to be clear that they are responding in an “official” capacity for that category.

So the goal is:

  • Everyone: can post normally.
  • Category-specific managers: can also post, but their replies should stand out as official responses in that category.

When I try to add a specific group in the category security settings, it doesn’t let me save the changes. The group appears in the list temporarily, but after saving and going back, it disappears.

I don’t think having the group in the category permissions will help with their replies being highlighted. The security settings are really only for “who is allowed to do what”.

What you describe with replies standing out as official responses makes me think of the Discourse Category Experts plugin. I haven’t tried it myself, but I know you can define an expert group per category and highlight their replies.
