If “Personal message enabled groups” is set to for example only admins and moderators in order to effectively disable personal messaging for users, the “Chat” button does not show up on user cards and user profiles even if the Chat plugin is turned on and the user is allowed to use it.
Users can still create DMs by searching for users, but it would be preferable if they can also use the Chat button even though I decide not to utilize the personal messaging system.
Reproduction steps:
- Set “Personal message enabled groups” to something like “admins, moderators”.
- Make sure “Chat enabled” is turned on and “Chat allowed groups” is set to something like “everyone”.
- Log in to an account that is not an admin or a moderator.
- Navigate to a user profile or open a user card.
Result:
- Message and Chat buttons do not show up.
Desired result:
- Only the Chat button shows up.
I tested this on a clean install as well as my primary one with safe-mode enabled. I searched around this forum and couldn’t immediately find another post about it. Forum version is 2026.2.0-latest.
