Choosing the default composer mode for your community

We recently rolled out our new rich text composer, which makes writing on Discourse more approachable for folks without Markdown experience and easier with a single pane “what you see is what you get” experience.

This new composer mode is now available in all communities through a toggle in the composer, which lets members switch as needed between this new rich text mode and our classic Markdown-mode.

We’ve also introduced a new default composition mode setting that admins can use to set the default mode of their community’s composer for new members. For new communities and most existing communities, rich text will be the default mode — but you’re welcome to change this as needed to suit your community’s needs.

Regardless of the default setting, members will always have access to both rich text and Markdown modes, and Discourse will save the last mode used by a member as their individual preference.
