Hello 
I think it would be good to draw attention to the function of this icon. Now that’s the easiest way to go back to the messages list.
I know it’s a pretty old thing but on our community there was some request about this to go back easily to the messages page.
I’ve added an arrow to draw more attention to that icon. This seems work and enough to tell people that icon has some function.
