Hi everyone,
We are currently using Discourse as our platform for WlH Community, and I’m looking to enhance our video-sharing capabilities. Specifically, I want to encourage users to upload videos directly to our platform instead of using YouTube for cross-sharing. I believe this approach could offer several benefits, similar to what we see on platforms like LinkedIn.
Pros:
- Simplified Process: Direct uploads can streamline the process for users, making it easier and faster to share content.
- Better Control: Hosting videos on our platform allows for greater control over content and data security.
- Enhanced Engagement: A dedicated video-sharing feature could foster a more engaged community, with users interacting more directly with the content.
- Branding Opportunities: Customizing the video experience can strengthen our community’s identity.
- Improved Analytics: Centralizing video content can provide better insights into user engagement and preferences.
Cons:
- Storage and Bandwidth: Hosting videos directly can significantly increase storage and bandwidth requirements.
- Technical Challenges: Is Discourse video-centric ?
- Performance Issues: Ensuring smooth playback and avoiding buffering issues might require additional resources and optimization.
Does Discourse currently support this functionality, or would we need to develop a special plugin? What are the best practices and potential pitfalls?
I would greatly appreciate any feedback, experiences, or suggestions. Thank you!
