File Extensions: Concern with allowing PDF and word?

I see that Discourse allows you to allow your users to upload things like word documents and pdf documents. It’s a site setting (“Authorized Extensions”). That’s really cool.

Here’s my question: Is there a reason NOT to allow this? I think it’s a nice option to give users full functionality, but I want to be sure I am not missing something. Is there a security concern with allowing users to attach PDF and word documents? Is there a concern that this will start clogging storage?

Disk space. Unknown content in PDFs and Word Documents. Viruses in Word documents. Stuff like that.
