Format quotes in plain text e-mail correctly

Fedora (@mattdm) is getting ready to move from Mailman to Discourse. So, I’m trying out how it fairs when interacting with it from the comfort of my mail client.

Currently quotes use tags
and
when a reply contains a quote. This should be formatted according to RFC3676, The Text/Plain Format and DelSp Parameters (https://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc3676.txt)

For a more elaborate example please take a look at Quoting in e-mail notifications does not comply with e-mail standards - Fedora Discussion

Should linking be a bad idea, please let me know, and I’ll copy my post from Fedora Discussion over here.

One more thing: the footer is formatted like this:

---
[Visit Topic](https://discussion.fedoraproject.org/t/docs-meeting-agenda-2023-04-26/81634/1) or reply to this email
to respond.

6af6a483).

This extraneous markup should be dropped in text mode. (Minimally, just dropping the parenthesis would be a good step. “Visit Topic https://some.url/asdf to respond” is quite readable.)

Is there a possible workaround for this? Some setting somewhere?

That’s exactly what I was afraid would happen. Half a year down the road and no response whatsoever from anybody from Discourse.

I’m afraid this will not be solved / implemented anytime soon. My conclusion: e-mail integration is a half baked courtesy. It will never be a first class citizen. And thus Discourse is not suitable as a replacement for mailing lists.
