Groups should get emails for new assignments - 'Discourse Assign' plugin

In the Assignment plugin, email notifications are sent when a topic is assigned to an individual, but not when it is assigned to a group.
I propose enabling email notifications for both group and individual assignments.

Current behavior

  • Assigning a topic/post to a user triggers an email notification.

  • Assigning a topic/post to a group does not trigger any email notification.

  • Group members are only notified if they actively check the Community.

Expected behavior

  • When a topic/post is assigned to a group, all group members receive an email notification.

  • Notification behavior should be consistent between:

    • Assignments to individuals

    • Assignments to groups

Nice to have: A checkbox to enable/disable email notifications for groups and another similar checkbox for individuals within the plugin’s settings.

Why this matters

Our team uses assignments to review new product requests posted on the Community. Request reviews are done in pairs, so we assign topics to groups, not individuals.

Reviewers have other responsibilities and do not monitor the Community continuously. Email notifications give an instant push; otherwise, reviews are delayed unless reviewers manually open the Community to check assigned topics. Even then, they must take another click to open the ‘Assigned list’ notification menu.

Email notifications for group assignments would:

  • Reduce missed or delayed reviews

  • Improve response time on product requests

  • Align group assignments with existing individual assignment behavior
