How does the username change period work with imported users?

I’m migrating a Ning community to Discourse. The imported usernames are of the form Firstname_Lastname. I would like to make it possible for my users to change their username to something friendlier, if they wish.

The default username change period option is set to 3 “days after registration”. How does this work with imported accounts? Is it 3 days after first being imported or after their first login or what?

Since we’re importing “created_at” dates, it’s 3 days after when they registered in Ning.
