Introducing admin sidebar navigation

The site where I am has no mobile users that have any admin capability’s, so we dont have any problems with that, at least from what I know.

Yeah we’ve discussed doing something like this to save the additional tap… easiest way seems to be navigating to /admin then triggering the sidebar immediately…

maybe more complicated but that would probably be even faster

We now have Introducing: Comprehensive admin search in case you are not aware, this is much easier to use because it searches everything in admin, not only filtering the sidebar links. Doesn’t help much in this mobile situation, but it certainly makes finding things much easier on desktop.

I did try doing this last year, it ended up being not as simple as I would have thought. We could try again though, it would be nicer at least in admin’s case to show this when you land in the admin interface on mobile.

While the desktop sidebar is very nice, the mobile experience is now extremely painfull.

Search is one extra click now, but it does work nicely, especially on mobile.

I wonder @hugh if there is anything extra special we should do in mobile mode. Personally if I hit admin on mobile and click the magnifying glass I would prefer to just search within admin, but I totally understand this could lead to a huge inconsistency.

Not sure how we can solve this.

I’ll investigate some options there!

There is one small detail I would change, if I could: the order of the tabs for themes and components. I work more with components than themes, and I’m quite sure the same is true for most admins. That’s why components should be first, or have focus, when that part is opened.

Not a big thing, but slightly annoying

A huge QOL improvement would be a section on the top of the dashboard that has links to either the most frequently used admin pages or the most recent visited ones, because there’s a bit of a zipf’s law with respect to the admin pages I usually visit

(thanks, that’s a good one! )

One thing we discussed is the possibility of allowing custom sections in the admin sidebar, just like we have in the main sidebar
