Badges have been discussed since the early days of discourse. Is there any progress on such a system? Anyone else working or interested in working on a badge system?

No one is working on this to the best of my knowledge.
First things first, we need some sort of spec with mockups and suggested mechanics.
We want to get to this but unlikely to happen for 1.0.
The poll plugin moved really fast as soon as the proper design was out there and is soon to be shipped with core.
