This guide explains how to rerun the setup wizard for your Discourse forum, allowing you to update your site’s basic configuration in one place.
Required user level: Administrator
The setup wizard is a valuable tool designed to simplify the process of setting up and configuring your Discourse forum. As an administrator, you have the flexibility to rerun this wizard whenever you need to make changes to your site’s fundamental settings.
Accessing the setup wizard
To rerun the setup wizard:
- Log in to your Discourse site as an administrator.
- In your browser’s address bar, append
/wizardto your site’s URL:https://discourse.example.com/wizard
You can rerun the Setup Wizard as many times as necessary without any restrictions.
What the wizard covers
The Setup Wizard consists of a single “Getting started” step that lets you configure the following core settings:
- Community name — the title of your site.
- Language — the default locale for your site.
- Visibility — whether your community is public (visible to everyone) or private (login required).
- Registration — whether anyone can sign up, or if registration is invite-only.
- Approve members — whether new member accounts must be approved by moderators before they can participate.
The wizard URL is: https://discourse.example.com/wizard/steps/setup
Once you’ve made your changes, click the “Let’s go!” button to save your settings. Your site will reload with the updated configuration.
Beyond the wizard
The wizard covers only the most essential settings. For more advanced configuration — including logos, colors, fonts, and other site settings — use the admin panel at https://discourse.example.com/admin.
Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with certain settings not taking effect after running the wizard, try the following steps:
- Clear your browser’s cache and cookies.
- Log out and log back in to your Discourse site.
- If the issue persists, check your site settings directly in the admin panel rather than using the wizard.
For more information on clearing browser cache and cookies, you can refer to this external guide.
