I would love to enable signing up with Discord for my forums but would also need to restrict it so only people with a certain role on Discord can do so.

Have you looked into the existing discord integrations?
Discord SSO by server already exists, and others have found solutions to sync roles.

Yeah but I don’t want people to be able to sign up at all if they don’t have a certain role. The only alternative would be to give them a zero-permission role after sign up and then change their Discourse role when their Discord role is synced but that’s a bit iffy.

If categories are secured behind roles then I don’t see the problem. This works today.
Either way, discord SSO integration exists as an official plugin, so I’m not sure how much traction you could get requesting this as a feature.
