Look what Discourse post editor preview thinks of above link…

That’s neat. However, the normal solution would be to keep nginx untouched as out of the box config and then configure Open ID Connect plugin or equivalent?

Surely being re-directed to an off-brand site straight away is not desirable? The login experience should explicitly be kicked off within your Discourse instance to give the user a feeling of where they are and where they are heading to?

Obviously can’t comment on the special needs of your site, but just my ten cents.

Being re-directed to another site immediately is a bit confusing?

How I would probably handle it to Robert, but just had to get it going again that was my brief.

There may be valid method here, to get a valid Patreon session going, but there does seem to be user experience compromise involved?

Open ID Connect may or may not solve the use case you have, I’d have to understand it a bit deeper. And Patreon may not provide support?

Also this means that any incoming http request will not be redirected now? That might be confusing or break things technically?

Also, and more concerningly:

  • What does this do to links and link previews on remote sites? Social media links to this website? (the preview in your screenshot tells you everything you need to know I think and it’s not desirable, surely?).
  • Does this look like a patreon site to every other website?
  • What about search engine impact, SEO?

Is there not another solution to achieve what you want to achieve? It may require a proper plugin.

(I am not being very clear in my responses I think, upon reflection)

Andrew Doig the person who first set it up (and who has since passed away) chose to set it up that way, the site was / is a bonus for Patreon supporters.

I concur about your points Robert re SEO, how site is seen (as a Patreon site obviously  ) etc.
And Letsencrypt is hamstrung which is not ideal in this day and age, something we want to just work (amazing effort by that team and works so well these days…)

So, a way to let people get to the front page, but need to validate with Patreon… but actually, I am not a paying Patron of Fruityknitting, I just have a valid Patreon account, so in fact it possibly is not functioning quite as intended.
Apparently anyone with a Patreon account can use that Discourse instance?

Very sorry to hear of the developers passing :frowning:

I had a brief look at Patreon website and the developer link takes to you to Discord (!). And then a whole pile of friction. Awful. So I stopped. Not encouraging.

(Be good to see a better developer experience with proper website documentation and perhaps a forum instead of a chat system over there.)

So was unable to verify available options quickly. This definitely needs investigation and some investment in time and potentially money.

Suggest someone is fully engaged to rework this properly. Potentially post in marketplace if additional specific expertise is required.
