Some personal messages are not appearing in the inbox

I’ve been receiving feedback that some personal messages sent between users on our community site are not appearing in the dropdown notifications or in the inbox (inbox and sent) on the messages page. I solved the issue for our bot user by configuring an automation to have the bot automatically reply (which resolved the problem for messages sent to the bot), but a similar issue seems to persist for messages between other users. Although this doesn’t happen consistently, I’m convinced that the PM system is not working properly. I haven’t observed any changes even when checking in safe mode. I need your thoughts on what might be causing this issue. We’re running the latest version of Discourse.

Are you referring to the site that we host for you? If so, it’s unlikely that things are broken – they are probably misconfigured – so we need to try and work out what is going on. In order to do that we are going to need a number of examples so we can try to repro.

It runs as a self-hosted instance on Digital Ocean. What kind of data do you think would be helpful for us?

I see, thanks for the extra context. If you are on the latest version, PMs will be working properly or you’d be able to replicate it here.

I guess start by collecting evidence when it happens so we can start to troubleshoot.
