What’s the correct formatting to onebox a link inside details or a spoiler tag? From this topic I see that with html < details > , the link needs to be on a separate line, but this doesn’t seem to work with bbcode [ details ] or spoiler.

I can see that just pasting an image link inside a Hide details block indeed won’t display the picture, even with empty lines before and after:
To circumvent this you can either:

wrap your link with BBcode
[img]some linl[/img] -
use HTML such as
<img src="some link">
