Starting out in Discourse- Creating Categories and Topics

Curious about best practices for crafting the layout. Our website has a big selection of blog topics but they can overlap. I have read keep categories limited and simple. At the same time, I want to foster conversations and make sure people looking for topics can find them!

Tags can be quite useful, if you haven’t explored those yet:

Hmmm… that’s a good idea.

Another thing to think about is categories and sub-categories. Take for instance Travel mentioned above. You can have sub-categories for Local and World Travel. Individual topics will populate those. A Sports category can also have sub-categories for each type of sport.

These can be supplemented with Tags of course.

Much appreciated! That was my initial thought…but then I kept reading about keeping the number of categories down. Made me wonder if it’s an engagement thing. Lots of categories/subcategories with less conversation in them vs a generic category with more volume. Then segmenting later as popularity grows. My brain just wants to segment now!
