Subscription emails should carry more context in message body

AI-generated summary

Users are discussing how subscription emails could better convey context in their body to help recipients understand why they received them. jmay notes that while subjects sometimes clarify, adding more detail in the message body (e.g., after a “Reply To” line) would be helpful. downey agrees, suggesting that transactional emails could benefit from clearer context, especially when using MAPS-NAC. riking lists several common reasons for receiving emails (e.g., watching a category or topic, being mentioned, or receiving replies) and suggests including those directly in the body. downey adds that including the site name in such messages would also help. Later, erlend_sh points out that Discourse now supports customizable email templates, linking to documentation, and notes this topic may be outdated. Finally, watchmanmonitor references another thread about controlling previous replies in emails, though notes a gap in implementing this for the footer. The consensus leans toward enhancing email clarity through customizable templates and context-rich body content.

Sometimes when I receive notification emails, I can’t remember why. Even though the context is all in the message subject, some additional info would be nice.

Possibly add to the message footer, after the “To respond…” line, something like:

You received this message because you are subscribed to email notifications for the "XYZ" category at Meta Discourse.

This is a great idea, and although notifications are technically likely considered “transactional” and exempt from it, would help align Discourse notifications with the US CAN-SPAM Act.

Yeah, that sounds great!

Here’s some of the reasons that I can think of:

You received this message because you are watching this category.

You received this message because you are watching this topic.

You received this message because you are receiving emails for every post.

You received this message because it was a direct reply to you.

You received this message because it mentioned your name.

The only thing I’d add would be the site name, e.g., “… watching this category on Discourse Meta.”

We now support customizable e-mail templates:

I’ll leave this topic open though since it’s about improving the defaults.

Think this is solved here:

EDIT - But I don’t see a way to implement w/o diving into the console.
