Tagging a topic from email in

Hello again,

Apologies for posting again I didn’t provide enough information and I wasn’t clear enough in the previous topic.
I followed this tutorial here Set up structured tagging with tag groups and category tag restrictions to create several tags to be used for classifying and searching for topics later.
The issue is that I’m not able to find the topic using the tag I wrote in the text.

First, I created a new topic through the web interface like this:

And it when done, it looks like this:

Notice that it’s tagged appropriately.

Then, I sent the following text through e-mail:

Trying to tag this topic to the #toyota::tag tag using email-in.

The created topic looks like this:

And the last two topic created look like this:

As you can see, the topic created through email-in is not tagged. And when I click on the tag only the topic that I created through web is shown.

The reason we are so uneasy about this is cause it would be building a feature for 1 person.

How would anyone know to add the magic syntax?

I’ve had a request for the ability to add tags to topics when posting by email. This could work by adding a line as follows starting with tags: and then a comma separated list. tags: tag1, tag2, tag3 I can see potential for difficulty, e.g. because there is no autocomplete people won’t know tags that are already being used and create duplicates, but I also think it can be quite powerful and help people to indicate organization they’d like without having to log in - and in my community many pe…

You can’t tag topics this way. Not by ordinary posting, nor by email. We only use the # sign to autocomplete tags, not to add them.

This is understandably confusing to people used to the conventions of mediums like Twitter or Instagram, but makes sense to those more used to GitHub for example. Here’s one previous discussion about this.

We’re not going to change this convention (i.e. we’re sticking with GitHub’s take on hashtags), but I’d welcome ideas on how to better educate users about it.
