No idea how relevant this is here, but I got this Invalid date too:
What happened was that I published a regular post (no federation), then added the tag that makes our posts “federatable” (sorry), and a few minutes after I went to the admin dialog and clicked Publish.
In this case it wasn’t a restricted category, but the use of the tag that federates is restricted to Staff.
