Unable to restore backup - No migration with version number

EDIT: Solution a few posts down.

I’m moving my forum from one host to another. I have a fresh instance of discourse (docker) set up on the new host and I can log in and admin etc.

I’ve moved the most recent backup from the current forum to the new host and when I try to restore the backup I get the following:

[2016-05-04 16:42:41] Current version: 20160427202222
[2016-05-04 16:42:42] Restored version: 20160405172827

I have read these two similar topics but found no solution for me:

https://meta.discourse.org/t/restore-failing-during-db-migrate/26509

https://meta.discourse.org/t/migration-fails-during-restore/31026

The version of discourse that I am trying to restore from: 1.5.1. The version I am trying to restore to: 1.5.1. Immediately prior to the restore I did ./launcher rebuild app on the target.

I have three added plugins in app.yml for both source and target:
- git clone GitHub - discourse/docker_manager: Plugin for use with discourse docker image
- git clone GitHub - discourse/discourse-data-explorer: SQL Queries for admins in Discourse
- git clone GitHub - discourse/discourse-akismet: give spam a whoopin

If the problem has to do with plugin migrations, how can I get past it?

Make sure your browser did not unzip the downloaded file (so make sure the file name AND extension is unchanged).

I think Safari automatically unzips files so other browsers may too.

Thanks, but no browsers were hurt in the making of this film

The backup file was scp’d from the source to the target machine.

Ah so - maybe that’s the problem… I’ll try the upload mechanism and report back.

EDIT: yeah, no, that wasn’t it. Using the web-based GUI (download from source upload to target) gives me the exact same result as with the directly copied backup file.

Any ideas here @zogstrip?

Though I have no experience with rails at all, I’ll take a look at the source and see if I can figure out what is failing in this case if someone can point me to where in the codebase I should look for what would trigger the “no migration with version number” error.

…or…

Could someone give me command line instructions on how I can blow away the existing freshly bootstrapped DB and just replace it completely with what’s in the backup? Or is that possible?

Ok, I figured out what the problem was and got it sorted.

Here’s the post mortem for anyone else who stumbles on the same issue. When I bootstrapped the fresh install the app.yml that gets created by default sets the version at “tests-passed”. So then it built like that. But I wanted to re-create my version of “stable” on the new host, and wanted all the other things the same as my existing forum so I replaced the fresh app.yml with the one on my existing site and then ./launcher rebuild app and it downgraded me to 1.5.1.

BUT… it left all the schema migrations in the database for the tests-passed version. And so when I tried to restore the backup from my current 1.5.1 it was looking for migrations that no longer existed.

The solution for me was to delete the fresh DB, rebuild again with my current app.yml, and then I was able to successfully restore the backup.

Here is what I did on the target host in command-line-ese:

cd /var/discourse/shared/standalone
rm -rf postgres_* state/
./launcher rebuild app
mv /path/backup_name.tar.gz /var/discourse/shared/standalone/backups/default
./launcher restart app

Then I re-signed-up my admin account through the web, turned on the allow restore setting, and successfully restored the backup from my current forum through the web interface.

Mods may want to close this topic.
