Using Google Drive for Uploads in Discourse
The discussion revolves around using Google Drive to store images uploaded to Discourse. csmu initially asks if this is possible, and Stephen questions whether Google allows direct file serving or if files are always wrapped in the web UI.
csmu suggests that mounting a Google Drive folder into a Unix tree could be a workaround, allowing Discourse to treat it as local storage.
csmu decides to experiment with drive-server from GitHub to explore this option.
Meanwhile, ibnux confirms that using Google Drive is possible but requires a redirect link. They provide links to resources on creating permanent links to thumbnails and embedding videos from Google Drive. They suggest saving files as image:driveID and video:driveID and rendering them as <img> and <iframe> tags. The folder must be shared publicly to work.
Does Google let you serve files directly yet? Aren’t they still always wrapped in the web UI?
Not sure. I’ve always used google drive from a desktop.
I’ve been told folders from a google drive can be shared between two clients.
It’s probable the google drive could be mounted into a unix tree … that would get around needing private access to read write - as far as discourse would be concerned it would local storage.
I’ll have a play with GitHub - odeke-em/drive: Google Drive client for the commandline · GitHub and see how it goes.
Yes it possible
No direct link
But there’s redirect link
And embed video
I think it must save as image:driveID and video: driveID
And render it itu img and IFrame
The folder to upload must be shared public
