How to increase tag description length?

AI-generated summary

The discussion revolves around increasing the tag description length in Discourse. carbonrich inquired about changing the hardcoded limit of 280 characters, referencing the relevant code in tag.rb. SaraDev initially suggested adjusting the max tag length site setting, but carbonrich clarified that this setting applies to the tag title, not the description. SaraDev then provided the correct solution: either editing the code directly and rebuilding Discourse or creating a plugin to expose the setting in the admin menu, linking to a relevant guide on developing Discourse plugins.

Is it possible to increase this from 280 characters?

Coded as:

validates :description, length: { maximum: 280 }

Hi Richard,

The max tag length site setting controls the maximum number of characters that can be used in a single tag.

You should be able to use this setting to increase the number of characters that you can have on a tag, up to a maximum of 2,000,000,000 characters!

I hope that helps. :slightly_smiling_face:

Thanks Alex, is that setting not for the tag_title though?

I’m looking for a way to increase the length of the tag_description…

The tag description length is hardcoded into Discourse, so if you wanted to change this value you would need to edit that line in the code on your Discourse instance and then rebuild Discourse.

cd /var/discourse
./launcher rebuild app

Alternatively, you could create a plugin to expose that setting on the admin settings menu, and then update it as needed.
